On our Finca La Esmeralda in Pijao, Colombia, Café Río Lejos grows at an altitude of 1,750–1,950m on vertile vulcanic soil in the shade of huge Guamo-trees. Agroforestry and the renunciation of chemical fertilizers and pesticides ensure quality and respect for people and nature.
From seedling to harvesting, processing and roasting until delivery, Café Río Lejos is completely under our supervision and directly traded from our farm to its clients in Germany and Europe. This enables us to guarantee an outstanding quality of all our coffees as specialty coffees.
In the last years, we have planted thousands of native trees on the former cattle areas of our farm and shade trees in coffee cultivation. We reconnected remaining primary forest areas through ecological corridors. Many new plant and animal species have settled in this refugium and enriched biodiversity. Hence our farm has been approved a nature reserve, Ánima la Vida, home to an extraordinary diversity of plants and animals.
Turning cattle pasture into young forest and introducing agroforestry, we experiment with different tree species, from fast growing pioneer plants to future giants of the jungle. In our own tree nursery, we cultivate more than 100 different native species. We share our knowledge and the fruits of this nursery with other farms, enriching biodiversity, restoring soils and water systems in the region, thus providing long-term resilience against the negative effects of climate change.
