Introducing agroforestry
In many parts of the Colombian Andes, coffee has been increasingly cultivated in full sun. While this can increase short-term yields, it often leads to soil degradation, erosion and a growing dependence on chemical fertilisers and pesticides.
As our farm successfully demonstrates, agroforestry offers a different approach. By growing coffee under shade trees, soils remain protected, humidity is retained and temperature extremes are moderated. This creates conditions in which coffee plants stay sane from plages and remain productive without intensive external inputs.
We demonstrate this successful experiment to other farmers who visit our cultivation area. Our tree nursery offers plenty of shade trees for them.
Expanding the nature reserve
In 2025, we could expand our nature reserve by acquiring a neighbouring farm. Finca El Porvenir consists of 4 hectares of partially eroded pastureland and 3 hectares of pristine jungle. The farm connects to our nature reserve Ánima la Vida and borders the Bellavista Nature Reserve.
We are now ecologically restoring the pasture land and planting native forest and fruit trees. There are plenty of interesting native tree species whose seeds and seedlings we use to expand variety in our tree nursery. The farmhouse is secluded in the mountains and can only be reached on foot, ideal for visitors looking for a lonely retreat.
