Café Río Lejos – an organic
specialty coffee

Sustainably produced – directly traded

The trees of Café Río Lejos thrive on fertile volcanic soil in the shade of nitrogen-fixing Guamo and Chachafruto trees. These protect the coffee from strong solar radiation, heavy rain and erosion and provide them with nutrients, enabling us to abstain from chemical fertilisers and pesticides. We plant, tend, harvest and process our coffee with great care, in a socially responsible way for our workers and in a sustainable way for nature. The result is a range of delicious espressos, fruity Naturals and mild filter coffees.

We have established a sales system for delivering the coffee varieties from the farm directly to our end customers in Germany and Europe. Instead of expensive certification labels, we rely on personal contact with our customers and on transparency, for example through this website. We invest the added value directly into sustainable projects such as the nature reserve Ánima la Vida and the renaturation of other farms. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Coffee varieties & flavour profiles

From the different coffee varieties on our farm – Arabica, Catimore, Bourbon Rosado and Arabigo Typica – we produce a total of six Semi-washed and four Natural brands.

We offer a mild Arabica, a more caffeinated Forte from Catimore beans and a Blend made from the two varieties. We offer these three types in both a mild and a medium roast. In addition, we have the Naturals Arabica, the more robust Catimore, the tasty Arabigo Typica and the particularly exquisite Bourbon Rosado.

Coffee styles at a glance

We hull our Semi-washed coffees after one week of anaerobic fermentation with low water use and then dry them with the remaining pulp on the sun roof and in a glass house. In this process, they develop a pleasant balance between fine acids and the sweetness of caramel and chocolate.

In the Natural process, the coffee beans dry inside the cherry, so that the sweet pulp permeates the bean for longer. The drying process takes up to two months. The storage in airtight sacks allows a maturation process similar to that of wine. We roast our Naturals mildly to preserve their exquisite flavours. Like this, the natural sweetness and fruitiness of the coffee beans come through strongly. When opening the bag and grinding, they release an amazing aroma.

What to know about Café Río Lejos

A specialty single-finca highland coffee

Café Río Lejos is a single-farm coffee from Finca la Esmeralda in Pijao, Colombia. This enables us to guarantee a meticulous production process, traceability and a unique flavour that reflects the special character of our farm.

Grown at high altitude in the Andes, it reflects its mountain environment through clarity, sweetness and balance. High-altitude cultivation allows for slow maturation, supporting structure and aromatic clarity.

It counts as specialty coffee, because all our brands receive from 83 to 88,5 points on the internationally accredited scale of the SCA (Specialty Coffee Association).

Each harvest expresses the character of the land, the climate and the farming system in which it is grown.

Our coffee is organically grown without chemical fertilizer and pesticides within an agroforestry system. Huge Guamo trees  provide shade, protection against solar radiation and heavy rainfall, temperature and water regulation. It’s falling leaves produce an organic fertilizer.

Agroforestry cultivation absorbs CO2 and accumulates it as organic carbon. It promotes biodiversity by providing shelter and food for mammals and birds and harbors a huge quantity of microorganisms in its  rootage.

Thus, Café Río Lejos protects nature, water and climate.

Harvesting, selecting, processing, roasting and transport are carefully done in order to get the best quality and the minimum consumption of water and energy.
